Welcome to El Baciyelmo
A XVI century building in the town centre, fully restored and decorated in a modern style. A house where you can feel at home. Enjoy a unique stay in historic Trujillo; in the heart of the province of Cáceres, Extremadura, Spain.
We offer 6 high quality studio apartments equipped with a mini kitchen (including refrigerator and hob). Each studio is individually styled, with a spacious en-suite shower room. The house has a lovely garden, where you can enjoy a good book under a lemon tree; or if you prefer, take a siesta in a hammock. Alternatively go for a refreshing dip in the pool during the warm days of summer. The pool is not quite Olympic size, but up to 2 meters deep, so the water stays fresh, even in summer.
Guests highly appreciate our efforts, since we received over the last six years a 9,9 guest review award. In 2022 that dropped to a meager 9,8.
Activities
Besides offering a nice place to sleep and relax, we also help with a more active holiday. We have information about walking routes, cycling routes (including rental), guided tours to Monfragüe National Park and routes on horses. Ask us about it or take a look at our activity page.
Ruin
In 2005 we bought a ruin in the heart of one of the prettiest cities in inland Spain and converted it into a charming hotel with 6 studio apartments. The size makes it feel like a home for our clients, as well as for us.
The biggest surprise is probably the clarity of the house, the courtyard and garden. All makes you forget that you are actually in the city centre. You can choose to sit in the sun or shade and on hot days you really notice the difference with the temperature on the street: the garden is up to 10 ºC cooler than the street.
The studios are quiet, simple, efficient, comfortable, clean and cosy at the same time. Pick the one you like best.
Please be aware that all floors are only to be reached by stairs. The Ground floor studio is 5 steps down, the first floor studios are 9 steps up and studios on the second floor are another 16, comfortably divided into 3 sections.
The name
“Baciyelmo”, the name of the house, is a word coined by Miguel de Cervantes in 1605, and appears in the first part of his famous novel, “Don Quixote”. In this particular chapter, Don Quixote is convinced that the helmet in question is the famous Mambrino’s helmet, whereas everybody else just sees it as an ordinary barber’s basin. For those who are not familiar with the story, Mambrino was a Moorish king whose helmet was said to possess magical powers. Cervantes, with his customary sharpness of wit puts the term ‘baciyelmo’ into Sancho Panza’s mouth, thus solving the dispute between Don Quixote and the others.
When we were deciding on a name for our small hotel, and we found out that Cervantes had visited Trujillo, the inspiration suddenly came to us – based on this idea of multiple perspectives and realities. Our ‘baciyelmo’ is also a lot of things in one: it’s a business and a family home, in a building that is old and yet modern at the same time. It dates from the XVI century, but has been renovated to offer you all the facilities of modern life. Furthermore, it is a lot bigger than you would expect before stepping in.
